Happy Birthday from Russ, Lisa and Madeleine

Dear Newby,

Many happy returns on this wonderful day! It's been 15 years since we left 436 N. First Street, and we miss your humor, warmth, and hospitality. We also miss the walnut trees in the back yard. There are few such trees in Nebraska, but Madeleine and I did run across one the other day. She picked up the fallen nut--and in a Proustian moment--I was transported to your house. I remember you saying that women used to dye their hair with the black juice once the nuts had hit the ground. When I told Madeleine this, she asked how long the coloring lasted, and I remembered what you said--"Until the next rain." Madeleine nodded, knowingly. We think of you, Marcy, and the house often. Congratulations, and many more!

Love, Russ, Lisa, Madeleine
